Our hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers in San Diego enables patients to breathe 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized environment, typically at a level two to three times greater than normal atmospheric pressure. This increased pressure significantly raises the oxygen carried by plasma, elevating oxygen concentration in the bloodstream by 10-15 times its usual level. This surge in oxygen enhances the body’s natural healing process by promoting new tissue growth, reducing inflammation, and fighting infection. As a result, HBOT is highly effective for treating chronic wounds, infections, and various conditions related to oxygen deficiency, supporting faster recovery and improved outcomes in wound healing and tissue repair.
HBOT has History
This treatment modality has been around since the 1800s.
FDA-Approved Treatment
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved HBOT for the treatment of 13 conditions.
Treats Internal & External Conditions
HBOT is an effective treatment for many conditions, including radiation tissue damage/injury, diabetic foot ulcers, and compromised skin grafts/flaps.
In 2018, Medicare reported that 8.2 million people had wounds, with or without infections, and that number is expected to increase each year.
Our team of specialists in wound healing in San Diego collaborates to provide patients with the most effective treatment options to relieve pain, promote healing, and help them get back on their feet. Throughout this process, your primary care physician remains an integral part of your overall treatment plan.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process by delivering pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. By increasing oxygen levels in the blood, HBOT promotes faster healing of wounds, reduces inflammation, and improves overall wellness. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or looking to boost your health, HBOT could be the solution you need.
As of July 2021, the FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen therapy for use in treating certain conditions. These include diabetic foot ulcers that have failed to heal despite standard treatment, chronic refractory osteomyelitis, late effects of radiation on bony and soft tissue, central retinal artery occlusion, necrotizing soft tissue infections, failing skin grafts or flaps (or preparation for a previously failed skin graft or flap), sudden sensorineural hearing loss, thermal burns, and several other conditions. In addition to these FDA-cleared uses, there are many other conditions that have shown potential benefits from hyperbaric oxygen therapy but have not yet received clearance and are not currently covered by insurance. These include post-hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke, long COVID symptoms, wound dehiscence or post-operative non-healing wounds, traumatic brain injury, sports injuries, interstitial cystitis, ulcerative colitis, peripheral nerve damage, and many other conditions. If the condition for which HBOT can be helpful is not covered by insurance, our office will work with the patient on a payment plan.
A typical hyperbaric oxygen therapy session lasts approximately two hours and the number of sessions depends on your diagnosis. A member of our hyperbaric oxygen therapy team will discuss your care plan prior to the start of treatment.
Before entering the chamber, a care team member will provide you with an HBOT-approved gown or scrubs to wear into the chamber. Battery-powered items, lighters and electronic devices are not safe to be used in the chamber. A list of other prohibited items will be provided you along with instructions on how to prepare for hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment.
